The Galerie Dorée: an artistic treasure in the heart of Paris
During this guided tour of the Banque de France, The Galerie Dorée is a fascinating story. Designed in 1640 by architect François Mansart for Louis Phélipeaux de La Vrillière, Secretary of State to Louis XIII, this 40-metre-long gallery is a masterpiece of Regency and Baroque style. Its frescoed ceiling, painted by François Perrier, was inspired by the Apollo gallery in the Louvre, with paintings by the greatest Italian masters of the 17th century, such as Le Guerchin, Guido Reni and Carlo Maratta.
A royal legacy at the Hôtel de Toulouse
In 1713, the Hôtel de La Vrillière became the Hôtel de Toulouse after being acquired by Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, Comte de Toulouse and legitimate son of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan. During this period, the hotel was completely redecorated by Robert de Cotte, the king's first architect, and sculptor Louis-Antoine Vassé. It was then that the gallery received its gilded panelling and took the name of Golden Gallery. Today, this emblematic place is a model of Regency style and Baroque spirit.
